7 Things to do in Istanbul – People watching

5) People watching by the New Mosque and Galata Bridge

Istanbul is just a fantastic place for people watching, street life and dynamic photo opportunities in general as no one street or corner is the same, and the sheer volume of human life wandering its lanes is so much that you can’t help but find special snippets of local life to observe or peculiar characters to marvel at.

For me, the best spot for your initiation into Istanbul’s somewhat hectic street life is the area around the Galata Bridge and the New Mosque.  An hour of calm observation here and I was able to capture some locals performing their abulations at the New Mosque, a very old lady selling bird seed, who went completely ballistic when she saw me (discretely) taking a picture of her (I wasn’t in her face or anything), women with headscarves among an equal number of uncovered female heads gazing at the Bosphorus with their proud Turkish boyfriends in tow, and the general splendor of the city view, whose individual streets seem disorganised and polluted, but whose appearance as a whole creates such a perfect and delicate skyline that you’re happy to hang around and look at it for a few hours more.
