7 Things to do in Istanbul-Have a ginormous snack

Posted on January 17, 2011

1) Have a ginormous local snack

If during your stay in Istanbul you get fed up of eating Kebap, Kebap, Kebap, why not try this mega bomb of a snack called kumpir?  But what the hell is it, you might find yourself asking as you look uncertainly at the picture above? Basically, it’s a giant baked potatoe which gets mashed up in its own skin. Then, you get to choose from a zillion different toppings such as black olives, sliced sausage, corn, and pickles, with a final generous topping of ketchup and mayo.

To savour your kumpir, head to Ortakoy Mosque – you can’t miss it, because in that area you will come across one whole street of vendors selling the same identical thing, with the competition between each other creating a sort of who-shouts-the-most tournament among the sellers.

I know what you’re asking. Did I eat it? Unfortunately, I came across this culinary delight with a full stomach, so I had to pass, but my Turkish host swears this thing is great, and that she always has one when she’s in the area.
