Pictures take you place – London’s Chinese New Year 2010

Posted on July 16, 2010

I have never been to China but always dreamt of going, of seeing the explosion of fireworks on New Year’s. For now, the closest I’ve ever got to fulfilling that dream was when I attended the somewhat more humble and restrained version of the massive event in London last February. On a partly rainy day, the streets filled with visitors and the restaurants in China town were packed to full capacity. Strings of lanterns adorned the streets and posters bearing two cute white tiger cubs were plastered everywhere. Through a tick crowd and the shouting  of a policewoman I caught a glimpse of a lion dance, making its way along a line of stores and houses, stopping to accept whole lettuce gifts, only to shred them into pieces, ‘spit’ them out, and then continue its rhythmic, spastic dance.
